“In the Pocket” is a slang expression coined in the American jazz community that precisely describes a very strong groove, solid joint musicianship, usually between the bassist and the drummer, but in this case it can be used for all the musicians who participated in the recording of this album.

As one of the best and most sought-after Croatian double bass players, Zvonimir Šestak achieved numerous musical collaborations, which helped him develop into a great instrumentalist. With the music on the album “In the Pocket”, he confirmed himself as an author who has a vision and knows how to realize it. The multi-year creative process, which began during his jazz double bass studies at the music academy in Graz, culminated in 2019, when he recorded the album with his longtime colleagues tenor saxophonist Mario Bočić, pianist Joe Kaplowitz, drummer Janko Novoselic and conga player Hrvoj Rupčić, while Zvonimir Bajević whistled the melody, and Luis Oliveira played the pandeiro and percussion.

Zvonimir Šestak Groove Assembly presented their new release last weekend in the large facility of Tvornica kulture as part of the Jazz.hr autumn and delighted the numerous audience with colorful compositions that combine various genres that mostly come from or have roots on the African continent such as Latin, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. And live, they proved that Šestak’s original instrumental compositions are side by side with world jazz performers, and that the virtuosity of the accompanying instrumental soloists exceeds the limits of Croatian jazz.
