Croatia Records Release Information

The Macedonian supergroup Leb i Sol (Bread and Salt) released “Kao kakao” (Like Cocoa) in 1987, and it has become one of the most important albums in the Yugoslavian discography.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the release of the iconic album, Croatia Records is proud to present the exclusive vinyl reissue of “Kao kakao”. The album, which has remained incredibly relevant up to this day, is available on 180 gram vinyl cut at the Abbey Road Studios in London.

In addition to the half-speed mastering done by Miles Showell, the release contains a rich booklet with photos by Georgi Hristovski, archival photos from Croatia Records and accompanying texts.

Although it was released in 1987, the band started experimenting with ideas for a new studio album already a few years earlier. The albums “Kalabalak” (Kalabalak) from 1983 and “Tangenta” (Tangent) from 1984, released for Jugoton, were followed by “Zvučni zid” (Sound Wall) from 1986, an album with songs that, in the meantime, were written specifically for theater, film and television series. The group, the members have admit, was going through a quite critical period since 1985, and the eventual failure of the planned studio album would have probably marked the breakup of another Yugoslavian rock giant.

In order to maximize the potential of the new material, the band decided to invite the young, virtuoso keyboardist Kiril Džajkovski, who has become a permanent member, and besides him, the saxophonist Goce Micanov, the singers Bebi Dol and Ana Kostovska, the bagpiper Ronnie Wathen and percussionist the Miško Mihajlovski joined the recording.

The entire material was recorded in the famous M-2 studio of Radio and Television Skopje, where, among others, Bijelo dugme also recorded.“Kao kakao” sounds incredibly fresh conceptually and in terms of production, and even by today’s production standards it is a truly remarkable album. With this release, Leb i Sol secured its status of one of the biggest bands in the history of Yugoslavia.
