This year’s double anniversary of Karel Kryl (1944-1994), songwriter, poet, painter and journalist, was commemorated by a concert at Prague’s Lucerna on 8 April 2014.

At an evening initiated by the Czech Radio and held in collaboration with the Supraphon label and connoisseurs of Kryl’s legacy, the legendary songs were presented by attractive young performers. The recording of the unique concert has given rise to an album, symbolised by Jaromír Švejdík’s remarkable cover illustration.

The audience at the packed Lucerna hall were eager to hear new versions of Kryl’s cult pieces. Supported by their own bands, as well as in arrangements by Petr Malásek and accompanied by the Epoque Quartet, the songs were delivered by such popular musicians as Projekt Salome, Xindl X, Michal Hrůza, Aneta Langerová, Divokej Bill, the Irgl sisters and Tomáš Klus, who thus expressed their reverence and admiration for Karel Kryl.

From a solemn performance with a harp, through excellently becoming irony, a bright poprock sound, splendid permeation with intimate lyrics, a vigorous eight-head ride and Moravian vocal tenderness, to tremulous, intimate profession, the concert had a dignified atmosphere, coming across as sincere, surprising and high-quality.

All those present (including Karel Kryl’s widow Marlen) at the Lucerna and all those who listened to its radio broadcast lavished praise on the evening. Now you can judge for yourselves whether they were indeed right. The audio album contains twenty pieces (plus Kryl’s concluding Anděl, sung by the audience alongside the performers) and represents a welcome hindsight and a hopeful vision. Kryl’s songs – unforgettable in his singular delivery – have been given a new lease of life by those who did not personally experience the tumultuous year of 1968 and the subsequent “Normalisation”, and were still children in November 1989. Yet songs like Veličenstvo Kat, Znamení doby, Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka, Nevidomá dívka, Karavana mraků, Jeřabiny and Pieta, as performed by them, afford the next generations of listeners the opportunity to discover Kryl’s music and never forget his heritage. This special concert thus perfectly served its purpose.
