Croatia Records Release Information

Almost four decades after its original release, Leb i solְ’s (Bread and Salt) tenth studio album – “Putujemo” (We Are Travelling) – has received a deluxe reissue. The album that defined the sound of the late eighties and cemented Leb i sol’s cult status as absolute virtuosos is once again available on vinyl, for old fans and new generations of good sound explorers.

The album, originally released in 1989, represented the pinnacle of creative maturity for the line-up of Vlatko Stefanovski, Bodan Arsovski, Garabet Tavitijan and Kiril Džajkovski. Born out of the wave of enthusiasm and great success of the previous album, “Kao kakao” (Like Cocoa), “Putujemo” (We Are Travelling) was recorded at the M2 RTV Skopje studio in early 1989. The album perfectly reconciled all the stylistic hallmarks of Leb i sol – Macedonian ethno-melody, jazz and modern pop rock – producing timeless hits such as “Čukni vo drvo” (Knock on Wood), “Istok – zapad (telepatski)” (East – West (telepathically) and “Ima jedno nešto” (There Is something). The album was recorded by the band’s long-time collaborator, Braco Zafirovski, and featured guest appearances from Kaliopi, Koki Dimuševski, Zoran “Lima” Jovanović and Kire Kostov.

The reissue contains a review by the music critic Zoran Tučkar and an exclusive interview by Nenad Georgievski with Vlatko Stefanovski. “With the album “Kao kakao” (Like Cocoa), we, in a way, saved the band – Leb i sol would have broken up if that album had not been a success. It pulled us out; the album was very successful, it brought us many concerts, stabilised us financially and allowed us to think more relaxed about the next album. We quickly returned to the studio, already within a year, and began recording the album “Putujemo” in early 1989.

This has been a logical follow-up to the album “Kao kakao”. It’s a bit softer in comparison, at least in terms of its “musical aggression”. We made this album more relaxed; we’d earned a certain credibility, so we were more at ease, and the music sounds a little more relaxed as well. We were young enthusiasts and we worked with enormous passion and energy. We paid attention to every tone, every sound, every detail. We took care with everything we did. You can still hear that today, that very dedication to detail,” explained Vlatko Stefanovski.

In addition to the lyrics, the booklet features previously unpublished photographs by Georgi Hristovski, taken in the spring of 1989 during the album’s photo shoot, as well as valuable documents about the album’s recording from the archive of Brace Zafirovski, the group Leb i sol’s producer, sound engineer and concert sound engineer.

The album was remastered by Goran Martinac at the Croatia Records Studio, while the lacquer cut was done at London’s Abbey Road Studios by Sean Magee. Along with the 180-gram white vinyl, the release also includes a download card with a code to download the album’s MP3 version. The artwork for the reissue was done by Darko Kujundžić.
