The best of Michal Prokop: extraordinary music in a unique package

A compilation of greatest hits is not quite the right term, although the content fits the description. Michal Prokop has never played on singles’ decoys, but fans have always found the essential ones themselves. For the singer’s selected set of songs, it is true that they are the most proven ones in more than fifty-five years of recording and concert career. From the sovereign soul & rhythm and blues of the late sixties through the legendary musical monolith “Město Er” (City of Er), the songs of the memorability of “Kolej Yesterday” (College Yesterday) and the very successful “post-establishment” career to the previous year’s “Mou vlast” (My Country), organically building on everything that came before.

In the chosen format of Prokop’s first ever “best of”, a total of 17 tracks found a place, placed on a CD honestly filled with footage and a double vinyl as friendly as possible to the final sound. The graphic design was traditionally entrusted to Karel Haloun’s and Luděk Kubík’s “3. Dílna” (Workshop 3). They used both the covers of the original albums for the 20-page booklet and Ivan Prokop’s photography in a technologically bold “mirror” concept of the subtitles. The latter offers a splinter-segmented portrait of Michal Prokop while giving listeners a chance to examine their own face in the reflection of time, that of Šrutov’s “Šťastný lhář” (lucky liar).

These seventeen beautiful finds are now forever a companion to our lives – and when they come for us, we will know which one to annotate.
