Gott’s second Christmas album, a festive delight even after 40 years

After “Vánoce ve zlaté Praze” (Christmas in Golden Prague) from 1969, Karel Gott did not record another similarly themed album until the beginning of the last eighties. The previous one offered folk carols from all over the world and suitable songs artificial, tested by centuries. This reissue retains the uniqueness of its intention, but also draws on more modern trends; after all, it is named after perhaps the most famous American song of the genre, “White Christmas”. This is the focus of the first seven songs, the other ten are again either old European or more often Czech folk carols and songs. Another highlight is “Chtíc, aby spal”, a famous theme by Adam Michna from Otradovice. Accompanied by Ladislav Štaidl’s Orchestra, but also by the choirs of Bambini di Praga or Pavel Kühn, the result is music above the usual pop production, forever a perfect fit under the Christmas tree.

The nine bonus tracks on the CD represent a thematic and temporal expansion from 1972 to 2020, bringing both other world and domestic songs of various new compositions, but also the classic “Tichá noc” (Silent Night), a duet with Lucie Bílá, “Čas vánoční” (Christmas Time) with Lucie Vondráčková and Andělská with her daughter Charlotte Ella. The very last bonus is quite extraordinary: Richard Krajč’s “Vánoční” (Christmas) was released a year after Gott’s death on an album of the group Kryštof and in a way it closes not only this festive listening.
