Supraphon Release Information

Probably the most important album of our popular music of the 20th century! Polls of experts and listeners alike have fit this set of fourteen songs for guitar, voice and words to the most important thing that happened here.

In addition to its undoubted musical, vocal, and poetic qualities, “Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka” (Little Brother, Close the Door) also became a symbol for the social context around 1968 and beyond. By fate, Karel Kryl was given only a very brief concert contact with Czech and Slovak audiences, and this album was given only its first print run and banned after Kryl’s emigration in the autumn of 1969. The singer’s subsequent foreign exposure had an important unofficial resonance in the form of smuggled EPs and cassettes plus radio broadcasts, but the songs from “Bratříček” became the strongest part of our lives.

Each of the titles evokes a story, a memory, singing at home, around the campfire, on the water, anywhere there wasn’t a cop nearby. The title track, but also “Salome”, “Veličenstvo Kat” (Majesty Executioner), “Anděl” (Angel), “Pieta”, “Píseň neznámého vojína” (Song of the Unknown Soldier), and “Morituri de salutant” have become anthems of silent defiance, the repertoire of anyone with the ability to sing them, play them – and understand them.

After many years, this reissue offers a unique album in its original stand-alone form. Aiming for the highest technical quality of Josef Koudelka’s iconic photographic foregrounds. The booklet contains a historical essay by Jiří Černý, and the complete set of all song lyrics is accompanied by photographs by Otto Delabola from 1969. Forty-six years after the original release, one year after the anniversary concert in Lucerna proved that Kryl’s songs are a lasting inspiration for the current generation of our top singers, here is the original “Bratříček”. Simple, true, perfect.

Unforgettable songs on an essential album, new reissue on LP & CD!
