Supraphon Release Information

Last year’s two Karel Kryl anniversaries, 70 years since his birth and 20 since his untimely death, are a fitting opportunity to commemorate the legendary Czech singer and songwriter! Although one would assume that everything has been heard and released, new pieces are still out there awaiting discovery. Karel Kryl’s copious archive has now provided previously unreleased recordings, which include not only songs sung in Czech but also in Polish and German.

His 1982 concert in Munich, dedicated to the Solidarity movement, is a cross-section of Kryl’s repertoire from the 1960s and 1970s, supplemented with pieces dating from the early 1980s. It does not comprise the biggest hits, such as Bratříček or Anděl, but more than 20 songs specially selected for that very occasion and greatly resonating among the audience: hearing Jeřabiny, Varhany v Olivě or Dědicům Palachovým in a Czech-Polish version is an overwhelming experience. The vast majority of the 22 songs are in Czech, some of them are half, others entirely, in Polish, four are sung in German, three of which are not derived from a Czech original. Although Kryl apologised to the concert visitors for his hoarse voice – while, unexpectedly, drinking milk with honey – the concert’s consistency and forcibility was not affected in the slightest.

Kryl appears in many semblances. He is by turn political, sentimental, pensive, jocose and ironic. His connecting comments are targeted and witty, the block of “federalisation poetry” is still irresistible today. This is Kryl in between languages and citizenships, always ready to encourage and cheer up by his songs and words those driven by the Communists out of their country, and – implicitly – us living now, too. The high-quality recording is accompanied by photographs taken at the concert and other documents, as well as an erudite comment written by Kryl’s literary editor Jan Šulc.

Karel Kryl on a previously unreleased and content-rich recording!
